Combining Empathy and Data to Build the Right Community for Your Work
How deeply understanding your own motivations, your work and your potential audiences can help you build the right community around your project. We’ll talk about the importance of understanding audience motivations, when and how to use data to increase your ability to grow your audience, and where creators often go wrong in their early audience development strategy. From our experience, there is no single method to building an audience that you should be following. The purpose of this talk is to distill the lessons we’ve learned at Kickstarter from hundreds of thousands of projects to help you develop your own approach to audience development that resonates with you, your work and the people you engage.
Jon is the Director of Strategy and Insights at Kickstarter, where he helps lead growth and engagement strategies for community teams dedicated to Kickstarter’s 15 creative categories. His work requires an understanding of the creative communities and geographies on Kickstarter to help keep the community growing, vibrant and accessible. He graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in Psychology and received his J.D. from Stanford Law School. Previously he co-founded an education non-profit in South Africa, a fair trade jewelry company, and MyProject, a collaborative project development platform developed at StartX Accelerator at Stanford University.
